What is SSI and SSDI?

SSI refers to Supplemental Security Income and SSDI denotes Social Security Disability Insurance. Both of these are federal programs provided by the US federal government and administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA) to provide 248/day dollars to eligible candidates. The eligibility criteria for the SSI and SSDI are a bit different.

Supplemental Security Income can directly be accessed by people suffering from any physiological or psychological disability but for Social Security Disability Insurance, it is required that the individual must have made any contribution to the income tax during the working phase of their life.

The federal government of the United States of America is well-known for introducing several different beneficial schemes for the people as per the eligibility and income of the people, residing in the US or working within the country or both. The decision to provide 248 USD will be the highest sum in history that will be provided to the recipient in their old age as well as to the specially-abled people.

$248/Day Approved: Check Eligibility

These monthly benefit programs cannot be accessed by any individual within the country but it is important to meet the eligibility criteria set by the authorities. One of the eligibilities that will be considered while enlisting the candidates includes the annual net income of the family. Financial aid has been introduced to support low-income and moderate-income families living in America. These payments are set to be available to all age groups i.e., from children to old age people as per their eligibility.

In this, while providing SSI benefits, income and living resources are not considered but only disability is the criteria which is being taken into consideration. Individuals aged under 65 are qualified for the SSI. While offering SSDI payments seems to be associated with a particular sum of the contribution made by the taxpayer during the working days. SSDI is generally allotted to people with physical or mental disability and who finds it difficult to perform even daily chores. Apart from this, some medical conditions are also applicable to SSA that should be fulfilled and the recipient is required to be younger in comparison to the age of retirement.

Eligible candidates would be able to access the $248/Day benefit from December and this payment benefit program that has been started for SSDI, SSA, Seniors, and Low-Income family members will have some additional financial benefits. The financial support will be provided to the specially-abled people for whom it is challenging to manage themselves and who are completely dependent on others for their living requirements.

The funds delivered by the governmental authorities under the plan will help the individuals in the management of expenses monthly. The SSA delivers the funds every month to the beneficiaries on a timely basis. These funds help seniors and low-income families manage themselves and their disabilities. Medical bills, food, dressing, and clothing are some of the basic needs disabled people usually face.

How to check status for $248/Day Checks

People can enrol for the payment benefit by browsing the online portal or visiting the local social security offices. People are also provided with a helpline number through which they can contact the officials at 1800 772 1213. It is better to check the section of eligibility criteria before checking the payment. Only eligible people will be able to get the amount. Status can be checked after the amount is released. Eligible people can find out whether they have received the amount or not.

It is important to apply for the program by following the procedural method. US residents have a good opportunity as this amount has not been released under any program by the government. This is a good step taken by the federal government of the US and this should be adopted by every country as it is equally important to be conscious about disabled people also. It is important to consider them and mental health patients already suffer a lot so these programs are supportive to them.

    • I sincerely empathize with your situation,my wife is chronically disabled and we were homeless for years before finally obtaining a choice voucher through hud.my advice is to go in person when possible and ask for a reasonable accommodation such as an advocate to help you navigate this hard time.best of luck to you I am a developer that is in the private sector though I know that every voice matter’s sometimes you just need to try several times before you get a sympathetic ear.

It is hard to get the best medication combo and dose, as well as a trusted therapist and/or psychologist and psychiatrist. I first applied for disability in 2010 and still don’t have any. I sure hope we can qualify, too

You are assigned a social worker and their waiting list is much shorter and quicker than the state’s …they have organizations that will provide you with furniture and the will pay up to $500 for your utilities to help get you started. I hope this helps

I can’t pay my utilities because my landlord just raised my rent 300 bucks yeh no typo Three hundred dollars more. I can’t get help and to top it off they took fifty six dollars from our SNAP benefits because we got a 3.2 percent increase on our checks. Lol wow. Yet they can vote every three months to give themselves a 5k raise in their checks. Yeh the politicians keep voting for raising their pay every six months. It’s insane.

The system had failed to accept the fact that my condition is a disability. How they expect anyone to manage or survive living with a low amount on a monthly basis and taking away certain things from a persons life style knowing to survive and be able to improve in life it takes to add things including other things like money. The restriction for the limits to be lifted and allow disable people to have more open doors and be able to have a large amount. The restriction social security has for disable is not any way to a disable be able to improve actually social security is taken away from us making people feel low self esteem. That is wrong and sure not equal in any shape or form. I hope this program qualifies as they speak in this post and Social Security says. Treating disable Equal is important and disable should be treated equally period ! That I will say is been another ongoing problem with Social Security. I pray and I hope I qualify and every individual as they speak about that this program was created and designed for.

          • I believe that is illegal. They cannot take money you earned ( you said you worked all your life) because you are homeless and have no bills. They may have taken it because you have no physical address. I think you need to see legal aids, this just sounds plan wrong.

        • I agree. I have been trying since 2010. Always denials. I’ve had open heart surgery, have COPD, congestive heart failure. Small cell lung cancer. And just like you can only get SSI. They say I don’t qualify for Disability.

Took me until 2003 to actually get on SSI because they said I’m 1/8 credit short to get my full benefits. I’ve worked and paid into social security since I was 14 years old. $904 a month does nothing. We are homeless, on EVERY SINGLE WAIT LIST since last July. I’m 55 and can’t even get into low income housing. My son is my care giver because I have seizures that can’t be helped. I have Fibromyalgia, degenerative disk disease. Herniations through my spine. 2 disks that have disappeared all together. I suffer from Chronic Habitual migraines since I was 11. I never seem to qualify for anything ever.

I also pay 44.00 for electric due to pip only receive 180.00 food assistance, I pay 50.00 s month phone bill . Hygiene, clothing, dog food for 3 dogs, plus I don’t have a vehicle so by that being said I have to pay heavily gas expenses to various ppl just to get to grocery store and Dr appointments. Seek out government programs for your area ie: EBT, Free Cell Phone Service, low income internet, housing/rental assistance, food banks, the list is endless you just have to look what’s available in your area.

        Reply
        • If you’re on SSDI you pay for medicare first & they don’t pay for rides for everyone depends on where you live, there is a co-pay on the med’s, a whole $12 a month on EBT, low income phone service is for people that don’t use their phone much at all. Housing & rental is back logged, food banks don’t work for people that can’t drive, so the list isn’t endless not sure why someone would post that comment ?

I have a caregiver in home. I have had 17 surgeries. 18th will be Jan. 4th. I have had every joint replaced or fused. I have PTSD, Depression, Anxiety, and bi-polar II. What saved me was getting the modification on my house. I only get $23/month in food stamps but get $180 from United Healthcare to use for food every month. I receive Medicare and Medicaid. All my doctor bills are $0. I get energy assistance and got free weatherization on my home with a free split-level air conditioner/heater. It is possible to make it guys and gals.

Society makes it very hard for single women unless u have a man to help. And they hold it over you and think they can order you around No thanks..I’d rather be alone.

I worked back in the 80s and 90s and being a female, I was lucky to make 7 or 8 bucks an hour while the men were able to land jobs making much more than myself even though I had more knowledge and experience in the field . Back b4 the pandemic I became disabled. I was told that I shouldn’t even try to work any longer because it would mess up my ssdi application. Long story short, I was forced to get my appeal with Ali judge over the telephone during pandemic which I feel harmed my appeal. Now I’m told I no longer even qualify for ssdi anyhow because as use I haven’t worked recently enough! Are you kidding me! And I can’t get SSI because I also married my husband at that time, and was told HE makes 120$ to much! What! So what they are telling me is that suppose my husband turned out to be a controlling woman beater (he isn’t, but I bet some women are in this situation), I would be completely stuck! He has control of ALL the money because I’m not eligible for anything. Once he passes away, assuming he dies first what am I left with??? HIS Bill’s! And no income! Thanks!!

      • I’m also on disability and can barely afford to live. I own an older trailer in a trailer park. New owners bought the place in 2020 and have raised rent every year at and before Christmas. It now takes almost half my check to pay lot rent. I pay electric, water, car insurance, etc. There has to be someone who can help me keep my home. There should be a limit put on how much a person can charge someone on a fixed income. I didn’t choose to be this way. The small raise we get doesn’t come close to what it now cost to survive.

    • Get someone to sign a statement saying that you did, in fact, pay rent, a portion of electricity, etc..
Then go up to the SS board, tell them that you can’t live on nothing and you can’t pay that back.
There is a waiver they can give you to sign stating you can’t pay that back, or agreeing to pay $5 a month because that’s all you can do.
Be desperate and sad, not angry. Hopefully your case worker can give you these options.
It’s been a long time since I had to help my ex with these same problems but hopefully these options are still available.
I never answer these things, but I hope that I can help your situation because no one can help me with mine. Good luck to you

  6. These programs suck! I am 60 years old and am permanently totally disabled. I have lost everything! My home was taken for property taxes although I should have been eligible for a complete exemption from this tax. An arbitrary decision by the so called Director of the Tax Bureau has cost me everything! I literally have the clothes on my back and two pair of old shoes. This woman is going to wish she made better decisions. They think they are God and can do anything they want! She hasn’t seen the last of me!

    • Please look into your spending habits Robert. Getting $1,300 in money per month you wouldn’t be living a life of luxury or nothing but that’s like a lottery to most people who can only dream of receiving that much! You should feel lucky honestly, you should be able to make ends meet as long as you’re not trying to live a lifestyle you can’t afford? I’m sorry I’m not trying to be mean or disrespectful in any way, but to see you’re complaining about receiving so much monthly per month in benefits is truly upsetting in many ways when others will never get an opportunity from our government to receive this amount. Be thankful you’re not anyone I’ve ever known in life becuz I’ve never met or heard anyone ever admit they get that much out loud.

    • If you can’t make it on 1300, you have some spending habits you need to cut out, or you’re giving it all away. You need to have a payee that can help u budget. Call Social Security; they can help u with that. Good Luck!

I am a American born and raised here but all this talk about extra money never happens unless you are the Boston boomer who got a stimulus check and I did not so tired of these illegal people getting money coming across the border get a gift card of $5000 and free everything!what about we the people what about us that are homeless and you give billions to the state for homeless programs but the homeless never see it ! $25 a month in food stamps don’t get it when you see people driving big fancy cars get $800 a month in stamps then you go to the food banks and all the rich fancy car people get their handout before you do and you get left over moldy food and in a paper bag what has this country come to in the last 3 years ? When we pay terrorists and other countries trillions of ballots when we go without! Answer that one without a lie !

    • Have you checked to see if free rides are available in your area for those on Social Security? Bartering is kind of cool: Some people are in need of food preparation that you can do in your own home with food that they provide. In turn, they would take you to appointments or grocery shopping. Maybe advertise on Nextdoor?

    • I am so sorry, Mearl, that you have to live like that as an elder and then not being able to help your son. My heart breaks for everyone of you, I’ll send prayers 🙏.
I’m going through hard times as well. But I’m not facing crisis situations that many of you are facing. 😓
I wish I had resources to give right now but I can offer a little advice. I honestly suggest going to the shelter. A lot of people think going there is like a dead end. But it’s not. After staying at the shelter for like a week, they will start an intake process with you. And this means, you will also be listed as needing immediate housing. And there’s many other resources that they will link you to. Mearl, I think this option would be extremely helpful for you and your son. They would work directly with him since he’s an adult.
Sorry I couldn’t offer more resources. Continue to pray and keep your heads up🙏💞

If we were living in the 80’s the small amount that we recieve would be great. After Covid shut down prices everywhere went up. I get $1800 a month in benefits after working all my life. My rent went from $650 per month in 2020 to now $1350 and on top of that I have to pay water, garbage and electricity. I know for a while I felt like I was having a nervous breakdown. Most of these programs designed to help low income are a JOKE!!!! Social Services can help a little but I’m also raising my 11 year old granddaughter. I just wish the Federal government would realize what human beings go through in this country. It breaks my heart!!!!

I’ve been receiving SSDI and as of the 29th of December my check will be 307. A month with the cost of living going up I have no clue where I will be living on 307 a month when my rent was 550. 34. 248 dollar’s this is a joke right? All of us know that will not happen, guess we have to wait until the end of the month to see if it’s a true story. When I had a stroke 3 years ago I called SSI to see if I could get a increase and they said no, so then I wrote letters, surprise I got no response, so with my SS and SSI I’m barely making it thank goodness for section 8, but when we get our 3.2 rise our rent goes up and our snap goes down, does this make sense to any one,oh well, one foot In front of the other and go on, one step at a time, So every one have a good Christmas and may the new year be bright for all of us 😊

  35. I live in Kanawha County WV and I agree with everyone else on here. The system has been set up to keep disabled persons from ever being able to stride in life, to live comfortably without stress and it also makes us look like we don’t want to help ourselves. The truth is we are set up to fail because we are never finicially secure so we aren’t able to give gas money to people for rides or pay for an Uber, this is essential when you have doctor appointments. Whether the appointments are annually or weekly it is difficult to make them when you can’t walk to them, can’t pay for a ride and can’t get bus passes. This is just medical point of view not even getting started on grocery store, shopping for hygiene products or even just trying to stay social. Money like this would help a disabled person actually live again rather than just exist until death comes. Hopefully it will be approved for every deserving body and social security won’t try to say they overpaid anyone expecting payments from an already nonexistent income. Which is what they do to me quite often. It seems like I have been paying back some sort of “overpayment” for at least 5 years now. Right when I think I have them paid off, there is a new “overpayment” that they have supposedly found. Then they always state it is something I didn’t physically come to their office to turn in. I always turn everything in but sometimes I can’t afford a ride and have to call them instead. I never have understood why they take some of your check when your homeless they done that to me also and it is my latest so called “overpayment”. Apparently I didn’t turn it in fast enough (within in 30 days I turned it in). I never even knew it had to be turned in. It’s not like it is a benefit it actually costs more when your homeless.

I’m 70 years old work most of my life had the medically retired because I made your back surgery in 2009 since then I have actually seen that sees the stimulus checks come out I got the first one $1,200 and $600 in the state of California not too bad I thought I have not seen one since because I refuse to change my medical insurance to their advanced Medicare I will lose doctors I’ve had for over 30 years if I had to go that route and since I won’t I can talk to all these guys that they say talk to them talk to them they can give you the right direction it’s opening room but if you don’t go that way cuz they need more people to get on that Medicare advantage cause him less money but I’m telling you what happens you ever listen to like a man I had I’m out you one pill I’m sorry 30 days supply one of my prescriptions cost over $6,000 went back to my regular Medicare that I’ve had for years only $1,000 and they wonder where the money went I earn maybe close to 1400 a month because that when I signed up to get it when I had to go out for surgery they told me that that’s the best they can do because I didn’t really know even though I had two jobs even though I worked one job and another job work for the state work for hospital medical facility where’s my Justice when am I going to be able I had to have a lung have a lung taken out just a few months back I heard it one time if you got cancer they actually gave you a little extra money a month to cover any additional cost like diapers and wipes now and I still don’t know if all of it taken out of my body or not I’ll get to that shortly I have all the confidence in my surgeon though I do and my oncology and we’ll figure that out on the 2nd had to lose my license temporary I hope cuz I need it because it’s hard when you try to live in a household that has to have money to survive and people work hard as they can it’s still they have to worry about things so what do you do you go to food banks I’ve been trying to get on section 8 or even any assistance to get me a little cottage somewhere since I lost my mobile home to the worst kind of company you can even think of you want to know some horror stories about it’s hard to tell you a few I don’t know with the previous owner everything I’m pretty smooth new place put took over it made sure hell for everybody in there and I wouldn’t work for him and I wouldn’t volunteer neither my ex husband who I live with at the time taking care of each other started working for him he learned the rope so hard way send me the check I was offered my one company that the government says that gives seniors discount for doing their taxes for him cuz it’s hardly nothing there is a straight short form and we don’t know said they’d go back to 2009 and get me all the taxes that is do me$6,000 to do back taxes until this date on a short form I have course had no I don’t have the means and the luxury to get off and go down to an IRS office and get everything done and now the new time is coming for everybody where you do it again going to some of those people is ridiculous trying to do it on the phone and the computer is it ridiculous so unless you can take the time from one of your children from their work in one day to try to straighten up some of these things you will never forget another check from the government or not so people out there good luck to you I hope they around all this Old folks up and stuff in it in one side of the country like they wanted to do in the first place because we don’t have any use we just built there country on all of our backs but that doesn’t matter now does it they’ll tell you the same place boy ain’t that a coup well all I can tell you is this good luck to the world because apparently I want to see none of that I won’t see a bit good luck to you godspeed and God bless America the one I grew up with where you can repeat pledge allegiance and not be afraid who’s offended some bad time bad time in our society in our life goodbye

My husband was working but became disabled and gets $1042.00 in SSDI and $174.00 in SSI. Since he has his benefits now they took my $841.00 in SSI and give me $174.00. So between the 2 of us we are supposed to live on under $1400.00 a month. I can’t move somewherw cheaper to live because if I sell my house they see it as a resource, or an added income, and will take both mine and his checks. We get $204.00 in foodstamps. Every month u gotta rob Paul just to pay Mary. I worked my tail off even after doctora disabled me at 18yrs old but back then alot of it was independent contracting or under the table, after having a stable job for quite sometime alot of medical issues hit me and there was a lapse between me working and not working. I have just surrendered to the notion that this is going to be the way of life for the long or short hull I guess.

I’ve worked my whole life so this has turned my life upside down. Being homeless at 55 is no fun at all.
