Old Age Security is an age and residence-based program because you can only start getting OAS when you are at least 65 years old, it is age-based. Years of residency in Canada following the age of 18 are required for the residence-based portion of the benefit. You must have lived in Canada for 10 years straight before submitting your OAS application, and you must have lived in the country for at least eligible years after turning 18 in order to be eligible for a full pension.

What is Old Age Security in Canada?
The largest pension program in Canada, Old Age Security (OAS) pays eligible residents and citizens a taxable monthly payment once they turn 65. It’s funded by general tax revenues collected by the government; you don’t have to contribute directly. You can continue to receive benefits from the Old Age Security (OAS) regardless of your employment history, unlike the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and employee pension plans.
Who Qualifies for Canadian OAS
The following criteria determine your eligibility for OAS benefits, and they vary based on whether you reside in Canada or not:
Regarding residents of Canada
- You must be of 65 years old to qualify for Canadian OAS
- You should be a valid resident of Canada to qualify for Canadian OAS
- After turning 18, you had to have resided in this country for a minimum of ten years.
For those who don’t reside in Canada
- You must be of 65 years old to qualify for Canadian OAS
- The day before you left Canada, you had to be a citizen or a lawful resident of Canada.
- After turning 18, you had to have resided in this country for at least twenty years.

For spouses or partners (60 to 64 years old) of LI Old Age pension recipients, the OAS Allowance is a monthly benefit. The amount of these benefits that you receive depends on your marital status and income from the prior year. The maximum monthly payment for the GIS, Allowance, and Allowance for the Survivor is modified four times a year in accordance with the Consumer Price Index, just like the OAS pension. How to Apply for OAS Supplement
Applying for the Old Age Security pension is optional. One of the following will be sent to you by Service Canada the month following your 64th birthday:
- A letter notifying you that enrollment by default was chosen for you. If the details in the letter are accurate, you can proceed without applying for OAS here. The month following your 65th birthday, OAS Pension payment 2023 will be made to you automatically.
- A letter indicating your potential eligibility for OAS and an application. You must immediately apply for OAS then. The form that was sent with the letter needs to be filled out and mailed to Service Canada. You must send OAS Supplement form 2023-24 as soon as possible in order for your application to be reviewed and for payments to begin the month after your 65th birthday.
You should apply for the OAS pension as soon as possible if you turned 64 and did not receive a letter from Service Canada in that month.

Sounds very good. But if you make too much the last year you work, they will claw back. The letters will make you think you can survive, but when they cut you back you don’t qualify for GIS.
